September 2023

Oh September! You were an absolute gem of a month! I filled the days to the brim. Most of them were grand.

I did learn that while I love watching pressure-washer-p*rn, I don’t actually love pressure washing in real life. The good news is that my front porch looks amazing and ready for Halloween decorations!

I pitted approximately one billion cherries, to make some cherry wine and Cherry Bounce, both of which were first-time endeavors. Honestly, the cherry wine borders a bit too much on medicinal, but the Cherry Bounce is essentially an old fashioned in a jar, so at least I know that will be delicious.

My c*nnabis crop finished a bit earlier than anticipated, so over the last three weeks of the month, a large portion of my days were consumed by harvesting, trimming, drying, trimming again, and then starting the jar-curing process. Last year I grew one plant and ended up with around a six month supply. This year I grew three plants, all of which were much larger than last year. I currently have six half-gallon jars about 75% full curing and my largest plant is still in the initial drying stage. I’m most interested in making tinctures and topical salves with a lot of it, so I’m very pleased with the results so far!

The kitchen was busy this month! Notable highlights include: a sinfully delicious smoked pork butt, and the most incredible hamburger buns, both made by yours truly. Bunny made his famous morning buns for a bake-off challenge. He was completely robbed in the competition; it’s a more sophisticated baked good and therefore didn’t exactly cater to the crowd who are simple sugar fiends. I happily scarfed the remaining buns.

I’m still watercoloring to my heart’s content. Making time each day to do a little here and there has been so great for my heart. I get self conscious about sharing my work, especially because I’m friends with so many way more talented artists and worry they see my posts and think, “who do they think they are?! These are terrible!” but then I remember that my people aren’t like that and anyone who is, well they’re just not my people!

The best thing I watched this month has to be “Cobweb.” It’s not perfect by any means and if you start to nitpick during your viewing, you’re gonna do yourself a disservice. If you just allow yourself to go along with the experience though? Delightful. I really wish it had played anywhere other than theater it did appear at locally—as a germaphobe, I just can’t with that place. It would’ve been fun to see on the big screen with a crowd.

I went to my first big-name-comedy-tour show. My friend Marco literally saved the day by accompanying me last minute. It was a fun adventure, but I think I’m good on seeing big names in big arenas. The usher in our section was so rude, wouldn’t help us find our seats (which were being occupied by people who KNEW they were in the wrong seats) but the worst was the couple who sat behind us. They screamed directly into my ears (instead of shouting above the crowd like normal humans) and it was so loud that my eardrums hurt the next two days and made me incredibly sensitive to sound. The leg-room situation was dire. I’m 5’7” and felt like my knees were up around my ears. Just really unpleasant. I’ll only go back to the SAP Center for hockey in the future, and only when my actual team is in town, duh. Go Flames Go!

The pets were also testing me this month. Nachodog has a lump he needs removed. At 15 years old and recent increase in size, this has to happen sooner than later. Not to be outdone, Fig-the-shape got a foxtail-grass lodged up behind his eyeball, resulting in a last-minute vet visit (with subsequent check-ups and medication). His previous two surgeries for a previous injury and a pretty serious roof repair has tapped my resources; doing gig-work while I look for a more stable, full-time position obviously but if you’d like to help or you’re a Nigerian Prince with unlimited resources, please visit here or here.

And now if you’ll excuse me, I need the finish decorating outside for Halloween! Have a great day! I love you!
