October 2023

October is my favorite. The brutal heat of the valley starts to let up and nights get almost cool enough to remind you that the rainy season isn’t too far away. It has the best holiday. I’ve loved celebrating Halloween in all stages of my life so far, and my favorite is definitely handing out full bars to trick-or-treaters!

We made our yearly pilgrimage to Apple Hill for apples and pumpkins and fresh mountain air and biscuits the size of your face.

My favorite band came to town; normally they only play SF but this time they were also going to play Sacramento, which is a bit of an easier drive. I loved the show, but the crowd lacked for manners and the venue was weird and dated and not really on par with the vibes of the band. Also, the restaurant we went to seemed at cool at first, but the service was a disaster AND they revealed themselves to be pretty racist—something that isn’t tolerated by myself or my partner. So yeah, if you’re ever thinking about going to Ace Of Spades for a show, and The Shady Lady for a bite beforehand, maybe don’t? I’ll definitely skip Sacramento and just see my band in San Francisco, which is where I prefer to see them anyway! (Unless you’re reading this, John Darnielle, then please play anywhere in Modesto! Please!)

I ate the last bit of summer—that gorgeous heirloom with what might be the best burata I’ve ever had in my life. We’re lucky the tomato season lasts so long, but I’m always sad to see them disappear from the stalls at the farmers market. I’m so looking forward to squashes and stuffed pumpkins and Thanksgiving though! We normally try out all sorts of new menus and recipes but this year we’re going back to the traditional fare. It’s going to be a real treat!

Happy Autumn, y’all.
