Did you know July is World Watercolor Month? It’s a concept started by Charlie O’Sheilds in 2016. The idea is that you spend the month of July painting and sharing your work, to help raise awareness for arts education.
I had several watercolor prompts saved over on the clock app, and figured I’d finally dedicate the time and space to actually trying them out. I had tried out a few watercolor tutorials in the past and got frustrated pretty quickly. But these new ones I had saved seem like pretty low stakes, art anyone could do, so with wild abandon I went into the month and this new medium!
I’m really glad that I did! It turns out I really love watercolor. And I’ve kept up with it since July finished, even though I’m working on other projects as well; I’m not churning out as many practice pieces as I was in July, but I’m still practicing.
You don’t have to make amazing art. You can just make things for yourself. Make yourself happy. Practice a skill just for the sake of practicing.
Feels pretty good. Just saying.
